The Scientific Method
The
Scientific
Method
What is the Scientific Method?

The Scientific Method is the process that
scientists use to answer questions.

They want to find the reason that an event
occurs - in other words, they want to find the
cause and the effect.
Ask a Question


The scientific method
starts when you ask a
question about
something that you
observe: How, What,
When, Who, Which,
Why, or Where?
The question that you
ask must be about
something that you
can measure
Research Information on
Your Topic


After you decide on the specific question you want to
ask, you will need to research the problem.
You can collect information using your own experiences,
books, educational magazines, and the reliable internet
sources.
Create a Hypothesis


A hypothesis is an
educated guess about
how things work.
"If _____[I do this]
_____, then I think
that_____[this]_____
will happen."
Conduct the Experiment



Your experiment tests whether
your hypothesis is true or
false.
It is important to make sure
that you change only one
factor at a time while keeping
all other conditions the same.
You should also repeat your
experiments to make sure that
the first results weren't just an
accident.
Look at Your Data and
Draw a Conclusion



Look at your results and
decide if your hypothesis
is true or false.
Scientists often find that
their hypothesis was false.
When this happens they
construct a new
hypothesis and go
through the scientific
method over again.
