Oktoberfest
By Lars
Aka Josh Lacourse
How did Oktoberfest start?
It started when Crown
Prince Ludwig married
Princess Therese of
Saxony-Hildburghausen
on October 12th, 1810.
 The land that the marriage
was held on was named
Theresienweise (Therese’s
Field) in Munich, Bavaria.
 Also known as “Wiesn”
 Horse races were held
after the wedding and
lasted for 5 days.

In 1811 the year after the wedding the festival continued with more horse races and
a newly added agricultural show.
In 1816 Carnival booths appeared.
In 1819 the city of Munich assumed responsibility of the festival and agreed that it
would be held every year without question.
To honor King Ludwig I and Therese they had a parade for him in 1835, then in 1850
it became a yearly event.
1854 Cholera epidemic cancelled Oktoberfest.
1880 Electric Lighting illuminated and allowed night time celebration

Held from September 18th through Oktober

Largest Fair in the World
The most important thing at Oktoberfest is
not the rides or attractions but the beer.
The price of a Maß is 8.60 Euro’s as of
2009 which is equivalent to about $12.75
but it is served in glass mugs that hold a
litre.
 12 oz is the standard American size.
 1 Litre = 34oz or about three 12oz cans.
 It comes out to about $4.00 per standard

during Okoberfest but not
directly in the festival.
 The media portrays
Germans wearing
Lederhosen and a lot of
people think that is the attire
worn in Germany.
 Where the lederhosen attire
is mainly worn as a
